A year or so ago, I turned 40. I wasn’t depressed about it, for after all, it’s just a number. But something just kept stirring in me that I should do something. After thinking about it for a while, I came up with a list of “40 things to do before I turn 40”. In retrospect, I should have given myself more time, but I gave myself six months!
In the months leading up to unveiling the list, I carefully considered what I wanted to do. Some items I put on the list I had done before, but I wanted to do again. However, most of the items were new adventures. They were places I hadn’t visited that were a nice day trip, tasks I wanted to accomplish, or visit some of the local Chester County sites (how many times do we skip the local attractions?). I announced my list on Facebook, because if it’s on Facebook, it is official, right? I invited friends and family to join me on any of the adventures, if they wanted to.
One item on my list was to have my photography displayed at a local café. I had been in there several times and saw that the art on the walls changed periodically. If I was going to do it, I needed to have it on my “to-do list”. Well, my 40 list became a perfect place add this dream. Through several conversations and emails, I was granted space for the month of October at The Gryphon Café in Wayne, PA.
At this point, I had never displayed my work publically, but what an experience it was! I was glad to have a friend join me EARLY on a Sunday morning (I picked her up at 6am!) to help me set up my work on the wall. You really know who your friends are when they are willing to join you for that!
And that is where the adventure began. The seeds were planted for what would become Manger Photography. If you have something you want to do, do it! You never know where it might lead.
