Family At Valley Forge | Family Portrait Photographer | Chester County

Quite a bit of the countryside around Philadelphia is rich with history. Just 20 miles west is Valley Forge, which also saw some action during the Revolutionary War.  The area is rich with history of Generals and militia men who walked along the farmland of the 1770s.  It was a cold winter and the conditions were not ideal.

When planning an outdoor photo session, one of the things you have to consider is the weather.  You pray that the weather will cooperate, but sometimes conditions may not be ideal. Even with meteorologists telling us what to expect within the coming week, you never really know what your day will be like until that day arrives.  The date was on the calendar and fortunately the family and I were flexible with the time since we knew there may be some storms coming through the area later in the afternoon.

We made our arrangements and the family and I spent the early afternoon at historic Valley Forge National Park.  Our first stop was at the replica huts lined up just past the visitor center. It was a little difficult to get started since one member wasn’t as thrilled as the others to have his picture taken, but when he came around, it was like magic. Sometimes with the youngsters, patience is needed more than posing… giggles more than gloomy faces.  Telling jokes or making funny faces help…better yet, tell them not to smile and what do they do? Smile!

We continued on our photographic journey, meandering through the park, stopping at the memorial arch and then Washington’s headquarters. With each stop, there was more to see and more spectacular backdrops to take some gorgeous family photos. I must admit that of the many photos we took, one of my favorites was taken on the porch of the former train station with Washington’s Headquarters in the background.  I’m glad the family wasn’t wearing matching outfits, but what worked well for them was the color they chose.  The various hues of blue were perfect against the logs, stone walls, and the green fields of the park.

And on our way home…the dark clouds started coming in. We timed that one just right!
